In December 2015 the Nicaraguan government started a program to help families in poor communities, ones who lives in shacks made of scavenged pieces of metal, to get real houses. Ones with brick walls, solid roofs and indoor plumbing with a toilet and shower.
This included the community of El Limonal that Global Solidarity Group supports. Through fundraising and your generous donations we have helped some of these families pay the required fee to get these government sponsored houses. Many of the families make less than a dollar a day, and could not have otherwise afforded the $300 fee (the houses are worth about $7000 US and the government covers the rest of the costs).
You can see that families are now being given the gift of a real home. One that is safe and secure where they can raise their families. These are some of the conditions that the most needy families were (and some still are) living in.
See how the community is being transformed
Now let’s take a look at the changes happening in El Limonal.
The houses are being painted in colorful shades, and some are even decorating inside with fancy curtains and draperies. The people are taking great pride of ownership of their new homes – for many their first!
You may think that a small (maybe 800 square feet) house with 2 tiny bedrooms, a sitting room and a bathroom isn’t all that much. But to these people who have been living in filth – these are palaces!
They have a sturdy roof that won’t leak and let the rain in, or blow off in the wind endangering anyone nearby. A house with windows and a lock so they can protect what little possessions they do have inside. Running water so they can bathe and be clean and not have to use an outhouse or shower rigged up out of plastic bags and a bottle of water.
These houses not only provide shelter and safety but dignity. Look at the faces in the photos and you can see it. They are proud, hard working people and they deserve all this and more. Is this a place for these children to live and grow up? We’re hoping to make it a little better – with your help!
Three people from our organization (Jess, Darlene and Teresa) visited Nicaragua in March and spent five days working with the community, getting photos and video, and learning more about their needs. Watch for photos and updates coming soon on each family who has received a house!
